The thread

Step Twelve names the result of the first eleven, a spiritual awakening, and sends us out to carry the message and live by these principles everywhere. Tradition Twelve names the spiritual foundation beneath all the Traditions, anonymity, and the habit of placing principles ahead of personalities. Concept XII, through the six General Warranties, names the spiritual character the Conference must keep: wary of concentrated wealth or power; careful with money, keeping enough to operate plus an ample reserve; placing no member in unqualified authority over another; patient enough to seek substantial unanimity; never punishing anyone or stirring up public quarrels; and governing no one, staying democratic through and through. Each of the three Twelfths turns and looks back at the other eleven, saying that none of it works unless the foundation is spiritual.

Where it shows up

The member who has had a spiritual awakening finds that it only stays alive if given away, so she picks up a newcomer for a meeting, chairs a step study and tries to practice patience at the dinner table. Her home group lives Tradition Twelve when a longtime member’s strong personality loses a vote and he accepts it gracefully, because the principle mattered more than being right, and when nobody’s sobriety date or profession buys extra weight at the business meeting. At the area assembly, the Warranties are in the room whenever a contentious motion passes by a bare majority and the body chooses to table it and talk more, aiming for substantial unanimity rather than a win. The Conference itself holds to the Warranties by keeping A.A.'s finances to enough to operate plus an ample reserve rather than a fortune, by refusing to punish any member or group, and by declining to perform acts of government over anyone. Service, spirituality and the Warranties are three names for the same foundation, which is why the tapestry holds together.
